Every year, the Union Sportsmen's Alliance and UAW Local 659 host Get Youth Outdoors Day at the Blue Gill Boat Launch on E. Coldwater Road in Genesee County. It is a full day of free fishing, outdoor activities, and lunch for families, and it is genuinely one of the best community events in the county.
This year, FACT was grateful to be invited along. We reached out to our families in Genesee County and let them know about the fun day. FACT made ourselves available and made sure that any parent or caregiver who wanted to connect with FACT had the opportunity to do so.
The Union Sportsmen's Alliance and UAW Local 659 provided a free fishing rod and reel for the first 400 children to arrive. Families spent the day fishing, building birdhouses, kayaking, watching bird-of-prey demonstrations, trying archery, and a lot more. Lunch was provided at no cost. All participants needed was an adult chaperone and the desire to have a great day outside.
FACT staff was on hand throughout the event. While children enjoyed the activities, we had conversations with parents and caregivers about the services available to their family. That kind of low-pressure connection is exactly what we look for when we join a community event.
Kudos to the Union Sportsmen's Alliance and UAW Local 659. They created something great for Genesee County families, and FACT is thankful they made room for us.
